Khmer New Year 2002

14-17 April 2002

Khmer New Year, like the Chinese New Year, follows the lunar calendar, but it is connected with the new moon of the third month of the Chinese lunar year. It is always a three-day celebration that is a major event in the lives of the people. Many people flood out of the city to visit family in the provinces, and those who stay decorate their houses and join in the traditional activities.

Here are some photographs of street scenes on new year's day in Phnom Penh.
